Curated Playlist: Exploring the Music of  Adi Oasis

Adi Oasis was born on May 17, 1985, in Saint-Mandé, Île-de-France.

Adeline Michele Petricien AKA Adi Oasis is a French-Caribbean singer, producer, bassist, and composer who combines Caribbean musical traditions with funk, R&B, and soul. This creates a unique sound that has gained global recognition.  Her work has been described as "retro-futurist" and blends elements of jazz and other genres. She has also collaborated with and toured with various international artists, expanding the reach of her music and that of Caribbean musical traditions. Adi Oasis' music is truly Creolization at its finest.

We are going to call this the "Feel Good" playlist. Kick back, grab some wine or other vice of choice, and let's dive in.

We will begin with a work by our featured artist. When I listened to this song initially, I got chills. I have never heard music like this before. The song can be classified as R&B/Soul, however, the Caribbean influence is present. Multiply is from her 2nd studio album "Lotus Glow." The song encompasses euphoric visuals in the video and intoxicating vocals that could leave the listeners' heads spinning.

The next song on this list was performed by an artist who was heavily influenced by the musical stylings of Adi Oasis. Cranes in the Sky is a song by American singer-songwriter Solange. Cranes in the Sky is a midtempo soul ballad that lyrically explores the singer's unsuccessful journey to distracting herself from longstanding pain. The song was written by the singer after the end of her 7 year relationship with the father of her child. I know I said this was a feel-good playlist, but this song can stop the listener in their tracks, no matter where they are when they hear this song.

Can you hear the influence?

Naked by Adi Oasis Featuring Leven Kali is a song about Love, Desire, and being Naked with your significant other. At first Glance, the song could appear to be of a sexual nature. However, the song refers to the desire to be emotionally intimate and vulnerable with someone. "Tell me 'bout your world and what you dream 'bout." The song portrays moods of love, pleasure, and devotion while expressing to the listener the desire to connect on a deeper level. The yearning to understand the real emotions and thoughts of the other person.

"What if I told you there's nothing I want more in this world than somebody who loves me naked?" This next song makes it into this playlist strictly on the premise that it is exactly like the last song. I know, why would I essentially put the same song in the playlist twice? It is because the culture that we live in would make it easy to switch the title into something more physically intimate when the idea is expressive of emotions. Naked, by English R&B singer and songwriter Ella Mai, expresses the idea of unconditional love and vulnerability. "Are you ready to fight just to see what's lost behind my flaws? Can you love me Naked?" The song, like the last one, expresses a desire to accept and be accepted for all flaws and imperfections without fear of judgment. Both songs express a longing for a deep, authentic connection where both partners can be themselves completely.

Although the song 9 by Adi Oasis states "we can be on cloud 9," it expresses longing and missed opportunity in a relationship. The song has an obvious Jazz groove, but that bassline is heavily influenced by Reggae artists. Many of the songs performed by Adi Oasis can arguably have different meanings depending on who is listening. This song makes you want to reach out to the one that got away and express the idea of exploring the relationship that could have been. At the least, it would urge the listener to not let chances pass them by.

Cocaine Blues by Adi Oasis and the group, Escort, is a loose remake of the disco-reggae 'Cocaine in my brain'  by Jamaican DJ Dillinger. The song tells a story of a man named Willy Lee, who has murdered his unfaithful girlfriend while under the influence of whiskey and cocaine. Lee flees to Mexico and funds his continued drug addiction as a musician.

This song may seem a little out of place, but can you hear the similarities to 'Cocaine in my brain'  by Jamaican DJ Dillinger?

The final song in this playlist is named Mango. The song performed by Kamauu featuring Adi Oasis is inspired by the realization that in relationships, many of us think that we want what is best for our partners, though realistically, we want to be with our partners in a way that feels the most right to us. The song, with its Reggae feel, teaches us about the ultimate form of selfless love. Loving the person your partner eventually ends up with because the new partner makes them better. "How could I not love him too, if he improves you more than I used to?". This break-up song is the most beautiful love song I have ever heard and leaves us with a beautiful message: Love is never selfish, but it is on purpose.

I hope you enjoyed this playlist curated for the Artist Adi Oasis. Her Caribbean influences can mostly be heard in her rhythmic basslines. The Reggae sound just makes me sway, no matter what I am doing. I hope the mood of these songs made you feel as good as they made me feel.

  1. Well organized introduction it gives me an Indepth biography of the artist genres, and it also tells me who the artist worked with. I really like how you have pictures of the artist so I can be familiar with the artist. All the video links are clickable that's good so I can watch it straight from the blog post to listen to the artist music. The description of each song is ok I feel as if you could've elaborated more and discussed more about the relationship between the artist and the song. I feel as if the bibliography is too short and the links have some work to do because they are not clickable. But overall good attempt at this blog playlist.
